Membership Meeting Minutes – Dec 12, 2019

Please see attached minutes from the a/n meeting.

    FB SURVEY_APBVSA meeting

Included is also a standalone document regarding the Financial Benefits Survey with comments and choices based on the general consensus of the group.  Once again, we encourage as many people involved and associated with police-based victim service programs to participate in the survey (Staff, Board members, Advocates, Police).  The government has dispersed this survey VERY widely (community-based programs, other agencies, Town/City/County/MD councils, Rural Crime Watches and many others.

We must ensure that our voices are heard loud and clear as some groups have strong motivation to access the fund but may or may not really know much about the Victims of Crime Fund, the Financial Benefits program or even victim services.

You may use the attached document as a guide, but you may also have other or differing views. Regardless, please participate in the survey, and if appropriate, submit a  written response. The link is:

gofundme for Linda Moffat – PM of Fairview & District Victim Services – House Fire

This GoFundMe is made to support the Moffat family who lost their home on the morning of September 3rd 2019. Any families worst nightmare came true that morning when they were made to evacuate their house and within minutes the entirety of the home was engulfed in flames. Luckily the family was able to escape along with the pets but all their belongings were destroyed leaving the family with little to nothing except the clothes on their backs.  Though there has been support from friends and family this GoFundMe is here to help support the family further in hopes that they can start to rebuild the life they once had. Please show your support by donating to this cause and sharing this on social media.  Thank you for your help in this time of loss.

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2020!

I hope you all get some time off and that our communities, highways and people are safe and secure, wherever they may be. I will be off on and off over the holidays but will be monitoring my emails and if it’s urgent, please don’t hesitate to phone me.

December 10/19

Wow, where has the year gone?  The Executive, family and volunteering are all keeping me busy so that makes things go by quickly. I’m sure it’s no different for you.  Everyone I talk to says how busy they are, and of course, it’s just a really busy time of year.

Just a last-minute reminder of the Cafe Chat on Wednesday night at 5 pm and then our regular membership/business meeting on Thursday at 10 am.  Attached are the minutes from the last meeting. It’s a long document so you may just want to print the pages you want or read it before you attend.  Also, I’ve attached the financials up to October 31, 2019, which is halfway through our financial year  & reporting year for JSG.

We will be brainstorming around the Financial Benefits and I will be bringing some feedback I have already received from some PMs.  From that, I will compile a written submission to JSG from the Association.

If you are attending the meeting – it would be fun to have a little gift exchange. Nothing expensive.  Use your imagination and creativity!

December LINK newsletter

Some interesting Canadian content in this particular newsletter.  Have you reached out to your local animal shelter to see if they can or will house animals while victims of Intimate Partner Violence are in Emergency Shelters?

Updated Membership list with PMs

See attached updated list of programs that includes the PMs names as well as their email addresses. Remember that this is for use for your unit only and not to be distributed to anyone outside you and your staff/advocates.

Conflict of Interest for Boards

Although based on US and European sources I thought this was a very good article on conflict of interest considerations that Imagine Canada shared in their monthly newsletter.  FYI and sharing with your Boards for their consideration.

Letter to Physician re: Strangulation

Attached is a template letter for those wanting to utilize at their programs.  The issue was raised at Diverse Voices and Joan (Gr Prairie) was nice enough to share hers with everyone. 2020 Prov Conference-please share w/ local victim serving agencies

The Conference Committee would like to ask you to share the following poster with your local community contacts that serve victims of crime in some capacity. This would include agencies like Shelters, CACs, DVAT, Restorative Justice, Hospital ER staff, Sexual Assault Centres, etc.   They would register as “non-members”.  They can be emailed or printed in different sizes.  Also – don’t forget your Detachment Commander/Police Liaison.

Some of our most positive feedback is from police officers attending the conference. This will help to ensure that our registration numbers are high and keep future costs reasonable as we no longer are able to access any grants for the conference and must be self-sustaining.
